Chiropractor at Bethesda Medical Center Takes Care of Congress and Supreme Court

An interesting article appeared on the CNN.com health website that came from the CNN partner MedPageToday.com. The story is of a Chiropractor, Dr. William Morgan who is the first chiropractor to receive hospital privileges at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda Maryland. The story starts off by saying, "When a Supreme Court justice is nursing an aching back or a senator has a crick in the neck, Dr. William Morgan is the man they may call for help." Dr. Morgan is not new to the military. His history noted that after high school, he joined the Navy where he received training as a hospital corpsman. He was assigned to a Marine Corps reconnaissance unit and a Navy special warfare unit.

After his time in the Navy, Morgan did not know what career to follow. That is where fate seemed to step in. The story notes that he found a career after he injured his back. "For months I tried traditional treatments and had no relief," he said. "Finally, when I could barely walk, I went to a chiropractor. I was 90 percent better in just a week."His experience led him to attend chiropractic school and he received his Doctor of Chiropractic degree. After school he started his chiropractic career with a three-month missionary team in western Africa. He then practiced for 13 years in California when he heard that the National Naval Medical Center was looking for a chiropractor. He commented, "From my time in the Navy I knew that Bethesda was a world-class medical center and that working there would be something very special."With his history in the military, and his desire to serve at Bethesda, Dr. Morgan packed up his family and moved to Maryland, where he became a contract employee of the U.S. Navy.

Since then he has enjoyed his time of being the chiropractor to many government officials. Dr. Morgan concluded the article by saying, "I have the best job in the hospital and I get immediate gratification for what I do. When people come to me they are at the end of the line. They have tried everything and nothing worked. So, when I try something and it works, I am gratified."Chiropractic is also slowly making in-roads in the military. Some military hospitals have a chiropractor on staff for active military and the Veteran’s Administration can refer patients to chiropractors. “Being so close to NAS Jax, I see a lot of Navy personnel in my office, explained Dr. Steven Read of Ortega Chiropractic Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. “If chiropractic is good enough for Congress people, Senators and Supreme Court Justices, surely it should be available to all military personnel that truly make great sacrifices,” he added.Dr. Steven Read is a 1988 graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic. He has been practicing in Jacksonville, FL for over 20 years. He is the clinic director for Ortega Chiropractic and Medical Rehab. It is the city’s only facility featuring chiropractic, medicine, neuropsychology, physical therapy and massage therapy. It is located on Jacksonville’s Westside near NAS Jax. Another Report

A study published in the February 2000 issue of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, (JMPT), showed that people suffering with migraine headaches were helped with chiropractic care. The study was conducted in Australia at the Chiropractic Research Center of Macquarie University. In this research 177 volunteers were studied who had migraine headaches for over 18 years on average. Many of the participants also suffered from neck pain.
The average response of the group that received chiropractic care showed a statistically significant improvement in migraine frequency, duration, and disability. The study also showed that those who received chiropractic care were able to reduce their medication use, with a significant number reducing their medication usage to zero! Additionally, 59% had no neck pain after a period of two months, and another 35% had a decrease in neck pain.
The researchers concluded this study, built on previous studies that had similar results. "There have now been several studies demonstrating significant improvement in headaches or migraines after chiropractic.” The Migraine Foundation of Australia estimates that some 12% of Australians ages 15 and over, experience migraines.“I see a strong correlation between patients in my office that suffer from migraine headaches and have associated neck pain as well,” explained Dr. Steven Read of Ortega Chiropractic Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. “Fortunately chiropractic treatment is fairly effective in treating these patients, which is good, because they suffer so badly when they experience headaches,” he added.
“I have seen so many patients that have basically been totally debilitated with these headaches, so if we can determine that this problem is being caused from their neck, we tend to get very positive results,” said Dr. Read.Dr. Steven Read is a 1988 graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic. He has been practicing in Jacksonville, FL for over 20 years. He is the clinic director for Ortega Chiropractic and Medical Rehab. Surgery No Better for Sciatica Than Waiting

The above comes from a study published in the November 22/29, 2006 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, (JAMA). The study was also reported on in an Association Press (AP) story of November 22, 2006. The report comes from two large US government funded studies on patients suffering from sciatica.
In this study 472 patients with an average age of 42 were assigned to either have surgery or watchful waiting. However, many of the patients assigned to one of the two groups switched groups and decided to go against the group they were assigned to. However these subjects were still followed for 2 years to see how they responded from whichever group they ultimately wound up in. Those that had the surgery were compared to those that did not for both bodily pain and physical function.
The study shows that patients who have been diagnosed with herniated disks creating sciatica had "no clear-cut reason to choose an operation over other treatment." According to the researchers in this study patients who suffered from these problems showed significant improvement over two years time regardless of whether they had back surgery or not.
Dr. James Weinstein of Dartmouth Medical School and lead author of the study suggested that based on the findings of this study patients should choose whether they want to get the surgery or not based on their own desires. He stated. "If you don't want the risk of surgery, you can do watchful waiting."
The article notes that about 250,000 Americans go under the knife for herniated disks each year. However, they also report that an equal number choose not to have surgery, which costs $20000 on average, and instead choose other types of care.
“Occasionally I have to refer a patient for back surgery,” explained Dr. Steven Read, Clinic Director of Ortega Chiropractic and Medical Rehab in Jacksonville, Florida. “Those instances are very rare and every conservative measure should be exhausted first, there are other means of treatment such as epidural injections, before surgery is an option,” he added.
Dr. Recent Survey Report

Chiropractic and Exercise is the Most Effective….A recent PRNewswire reported on the results of a study that shows that most people prefer drug free care for back pain over taking medications. The survey, conducted by the I/H/R Research Group, a full service market research firm that includes experienced health care managers, interviewed 800 adults nationwide in the Spring of 2004.
The survey, commissioned by the American Chiropractic Association, showed that more than 80 percent of chronic back pain sufferers surveyed would prefer to avoid the use of medication to treat their ailments. However, a majority of those surveyed were taking either narcotics, muscle relaxants or over-the-counter medications to deal with their pain.
The survey also showed that more than 64 percent of the respondents said that they would consider seeking the health care services of a Doctor of Chiropractic to provide their drug free care. However, the survey showed that only 13.8 percent of respondents were currently seeking health care from a Chiropractor.
The survey also showed the following:· 18 percent of all chronic back pain was reported as the result of an accident or injury · Almost 40 percent reported their pain as very severe or severe at the time of the survey · 71 percent of respondents said they had suffered from chronic back pain for five or more years
The survey participants were also asked if they felt their pain was under control as a result of their current treatment. To this question 30 percent indicated their pain was not, and an additional 39.3 percent said their pain was only moderately under control.
“Sometimes medication is need in certain cases, I refer some patients to a medical doctor for pain or anti-inflammatory meds,” explained Dr. Steve Read of Ortega Chiropractic Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. “Narcotics should always be just a temporary measure though,” he added. “Typically, most of my patients don’t need them for more than two weeks.”

Chiropractic and Exercise is the Most Effective….

A study released by the British, “Medical Research Council” (MRC) showed that Chiropractic and exercise was effective for patients suffering from lower back pain. The British study used the term “spinal manipulation”, (more correctly termed “adjustments”), which they noted is the primary form of care performed by Doctors of Chiropractic. The study, published in the November 19, 2004 edition of the British Medical Journal, stated that when combined with an exercise program, these two offer an effective treatment for those suffering from back pain. The trial study recruited more than 1,300 patients from across the UK, whose back pain had not improved after receiving what they termed the “best care” in general medical practice. These patients were then compared and assessed to judge the effectiveness of three different types of care. The three types of care were:o A class-based physical exercise program. o Spinal manipulation o A combined package of spinal manipulation followed by a program of exercise The results showed that to varying degrees all patients in the treatment groups reported improved back function and reduced pain over time. They noted that patients assigned to exercise classes in addition to general practice care reported a small benefit at three months but not at one year. Those assigned to spinal manipulation in addition to general practice care reported a small to moderate benefit at three months and a small, on average, benefit at one year. However, the greatest improvement was found in the patients assigned to combined manipulation and exercise in addition to general practice care. “We use exercise with most of our patients,” explained Dr. Steven Read, DC, Clinic Director of Ortega Chiropractic and Medical Rehab in Jacksonville, Florida. “We use several Nautilus weight machines and elastic bands to help strengthen the core of our patients,” he added.Dr. Steven Read is a 1988 graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic. What to look for in a Chiropractor

Chiropractic is considered to be alternative and complementary medicine that involves “adjusting” of the bones, spinal cord, and soft tissues. Sometimes, even diet and physical exercises are a part of this therapy. This system is based on the belief that spinal joint disorders affect the overall working of the body. Even though chiropractic was initially ridiculed, the efficacy of the system is making it a popular option.

Some chiropractors believe in only making adjustments to the spine. These are the “straights” who are now a minority. There are other practitioners or the “mixers” who consider massage, exercise, and even nutrition to be of some significance while the patient’s recuperating. What works for one person may not work for another. However, since chiropractic is highly adaptable to an individual, the success rate is quite high with this approach.

In this method, the chiropractor should be skilled enough to manipulate the joints such as spine, knee, and the elbow to lessen the pain. Sometimes joint functioning that was lost earlier could be recovered or even increased. The procedure is very controlled and only a certain amount of force should be applied in a particular direction. Very often, the positive effects of the chiropractic adjustment are felt immediately.

You could search for them online or in the yellow pages. You must get all your doubts and questions clarified with your chiropractor before starting on the therapy. Find out all you have to about the practitioner and also the type of treatment your chiropractor uses.

If you have decided to try chiropractic, there are several factors you must consider before zeroing in on a chiropractor. Most doctors of chiropractic have received about four years of undergraduate pre-medical education. The requirements to become a chiropractor are very strict and hence you can be assured that your qualified practitioner is well-equipped in this science. Chiropractic adjustments are learned in a clinic setting and this practical training is very essential as chiropractic is supposed to be painless and gentle. The practitioner has received about 4,200 hours of training in an accredited college.

That chiropractic has come a long way can be gauged by the fact that nearly every insurance company pays for chiropractic treatment. Many medical doctors actually refer their patients to chiropractor and even some mainstream hospitals are now allowing chiropractors to practice and use their clinical amenities.

What you need to know about back pain?

Many of us have complained of back pain or know of someone who has had a similar condition. In the US, this is fifth most frequent reason for people to visit their physicians. Even when you’re sitting, the muscles that support the back are in action. This constant usage is one of the primary reasons that trigger back pain. You could have lower back pain, tailbone pain, or discomfort in your upper back. The pain could be chronic and last over several months. Sometimes, it could be accompanied by a tingling sensation and weakness. The pain could extend to the neck, upper limbs or lower limbs.

A lot of people believe that back pain is due to the sedentary lifestyle and bad habits. While this is true, many people who are physically active and have a healthy diet also complain of back pain. Very often, back pain is caused by strain or stress; you could have back pain because of lumbar muscle strain or a ruptured disc. How the condition needs to be handled, depends on the person and the situation. Sometimes back ache could be caused due to aging. In women, osteoporosis could also cause back pain.

The pain could be intense, but you may notice no associated conditions. However, if you think your back pain is a reason to worry, you must see a doctor immediately; maybe if the back pain is intense or persists for more than a few days. The back ache could be symptomatic of a severe and yet less obvious health condition—such as a kidney infection. How intense your pain is doesn’t necessarily indicate how severe your back condition could be.

Many people are trying out alternative therapies to deal with back pain. Yoga, walking, and exercising regularly are known to provide a lot of relief to those afflicted with back pain. You must ensure that the spinal muscles are strengthened. A diet that has enough Calcium would make the bones strong and hence more resistant to stress fracture. Overweight people tend to complain of back pain very often. You must not stress yourself out during the recovery period. Ensure that your posture isn’t triggering the back ache.

Chiropractic is another option for some people. We use a team approach of medicine and chiropractic in our office to help people.
